Berry, berry delicious

A perfect 80 degree day in July means--you guessed it!--berry picking! A quick trip just outside of Germantown (Mommy is getting to know the beltway!) and we were at Butler's Orchard where the blackberries were big, juicy & delicious. Anna learned the proper picking technique (don't squeeze them!) very quickly and filled a bucket. Mmmmmmmm....blackberry jam, blackberry scones, just plain blackberries! We can't wait until next month when the raspberries are ripe!

Oh a hiking we will go...

Another day, another nature center! Mommy & Anna made a trip to the Meadowside Nature Center--complete with old time log cabin decor-- and hiked. The day was not great for hiking-- 93 & humid--whoops! Mommy forgot to check the weather! But, many butterfly, fungi & bird sightings later, we felt accomplished when we reached the end of the trail! And, as Anna said, "We should go here when it's cooler." Wise kid. :)

Shark Week (dun dun...dun dun)

Silver Spring is home to the headquarters of The Discovery Channel, which currently boasts a HUGE building covering shark called "Chompie" to celebrate "Shark Week." We've gotten to know Chompie well on our drives around town, particular as Mommy finds her way around the one way streets that make it clear we should stick to walking. Tonight the kid's event at the fountain was sponsored by the Discovery Channel, complete with Chompie mascot & shark tattoos. Add a moon bounce, chalking, dancing & 90 degree heat--a sure recipe to tire out Miss Anna! Oh, and a lot of fun!

Green Thumbs (we hope!)

Because we're south of the Mason-Dixon line and we have a longer growing season (we hope!), Anna & Mommy decided to try our hands at gardening. We planted mini-pumpkins, zucchini, beans & basil. It was a lot of fun and maybe something will even grow! :)

We're going to the zoo, zoo, zoo...how about you, you, you?

In what is certain to be the first of many, many, many visits, Anna & Mommy went to the National Zoo (and yes, we're super excited that it's just "the zoo" for us!). After a hot & humid weekend, the weather was in the low-80s, sunny & breezy--a perfect day for seeing lions (Anna's current fave), tigers and reptiles (oh, my!). I think we may have to do this again next week...

Rock Creek Rocks!

We're lucky to live close to Rock Creek National Park. They not only have a very 3-year old friendly nature center where Anna got to dress like a beekeeper, visit with bees & turtles, and touch all kinds of animal furs & bones, but it is also the only national park with a planetarium. Wednesdays they have a special "star show" for younger kid, so Anna & Mommy got to learn all about the sky above DC in the summer. Very cool!

Moving on out...

Although we've now settled in nicely, here are a few pictures on Anna helping to clear out our place in Chicago. Yes, she's only 3, but we put everyone to work!

Seriously...what's not to love?

A backyard, a park with a space shuttle "ride", and ice cream just a three minute walk away... I think Anna is settling in very nicely.

Silver Spring!! Well, Silver Fountain.

To celebrate our first week in Silver Spring, we went to Little Tots at the Fountain. Anna had so much fun running through the water...well after her in initial "not wanting to get her pigtails wet" reaction. Wednesday evenings are going to be a lot of fun in our new town!

Putt-putt...or AM I DONE YET?

Before we left Chicago, Anna, Momm & Daddy went for a family "golf outing." Daddy taught Anna the fine art of putting, but after 1 hole, she was DONE! 11 minutes later (it was a 9 hole course) we were back in the car on our way to Poochies to get some yummy Chicago style hot dogs. Maybe 3 is a little young for putt-putt...or maybe golf is just not Anna's sport. :)

I LOVE Daddy!

To celebrate Father's Day, Mommy & Anna took Daddy to one of the best restaurants we've ever been to in Chicago, Chalkboard. We had a yummy dinner, hung out with the chef, toured his backyard garden and chowed down on dessert. It was a super fun day! Happy Father's Day, Daddy!
